To say we live in crazy times is, at least, an understatement. Officially in a recession, we dine on economic soup du jour. Economic and banking terms are being thrown around at such a point that we lose all perception as to what they actually mean. I’m looking at this from a college student’s perspective. Besides entering school, be it undergraduate or graduate, you have to have a functional knowledge of the economics of college; student loans, credit cards, credit reports, credit scores, etc. Specifically, here, I will briefly address credit reports (free credit report). Now, it is a crazy time to be bombarded with all of these terms while going through school.

Let’s say that you’re already in college and you’ve done your research and you have your first or second credit card at this point. You have your student loans in order as well. Right now, you’re making monthly payments on your credit card(s). When you graduate college, the time comes for you to start repaying your student loans. Now, if you’re late on a payment for either your credit card(s) or your student loans, that can greatly affect you in the future.

A free credit report is the route to go to learn what your credit score is. Request a credit report sparingly as frequent checks on your credit can also lower your score. Get a free credit report when you do, though. You are allowed one free credit report per year from the government, otherwise, there are many other options for checking your credit score. A quick online search can yield some lucrative and easy sources for checking your credit score via your credit report. This will provide you with a great scale as to where you stand credit-wise and can help you with your personal financial future.

All in all, I think we are all getting tired or economic soup, but in the age of global warming, at least it’s a dish that’s still served hot.
