Do your student loan research

Tuesday Feb 16, 2010

It seems you can’t keep a lucky penny nowadays. It can no longer just be a keepsake or an object of luck to help you through your college days and beyond. Indeed, you either save it to pay something off or spend it immediately on something necessary (I won’t challenge the necessity of that 6 pack this week). What is my point? Today, to go through school, you almost always have to get a student loan of some sort.

These days it may seem that lenders are predatory with only their own collection of lucky pennies in mind. They [lenders] only want to make money off of you and have no stake in your education. I’m sure I could find a gaggle of pessimists to agree with that statement. However, what I’m really saying it this; loans do exist that are reasonable to help you through school and can be repaid in a reasonable fashion. Many banks (I suggest looking at your local banks first and foremost) can help you out.

Even though federal grants and loans are under siege right now by lobbyists, the FED is still a viable option to obtain student loans. When you consider not only tuition and books, but living expenses, bills, food, and life’s emergencies, you are going to need some type of assistance as you go through school. Having a full or part time job while studying can only go so far before you realize you may need a loan.

Explore your school newspaper for a good place to start to look for student loans or student finances. I’m sure it has written at length at one point or another at different student resources. Next, I’d look up different offers online for great places to turn. Make sure to look into reviews on the loan or service you’re exploring. That way, you can make the best decision for yourself and avoid anything predatory. Do your research.
