What private information is in a credit report?

Tuesday Mar 16, 2010

Your credit report is a compiled list of your credit history. It shows if you have made your bill payments on time, whom you owe money to, and if you have not made payments on particular bills.

One of the nice things about your credit report is that you have the right to know who has inquired about your credit file or who has requested your credit report over a period of 6 months.

Your credit report contains a lot of private information: your name, your address and any previous addresses, your phone number (even if it’s unlisted), social security number, employment information and year/month of your birth.

It is strongly recommended that you get your credit report on a regular basis, so that you can make sure all information is correct and valid. Plus, since there is so much identity theft in this day and age, you always want to be on the safe side. The 2 main reasons for errors in a credit report: you may have been mistaken for someone with a similar name and their information is accidentally put into your file. Or, someone has committed fraud with your information.
